new national coal museum - coming soon!
The New Museum project is in progress. If you have any questions regarding the new museum please contact: Joy Danford (Museum Manager) or Mel Brooks (Project Director).
The worldwide recession has slowed the new development, as it has slowed so many other projects in New Zealand and overseas. However work on refurbishment of the Railway Station, the gateway to the new museum, continues. This now has electricity, water and sewerage.
While every effort has been made to retain the old kauri tongue-in-groove ceilings and walls where possible, timbers have been destroyed and rotted in the years when the station was no longer used for the rail network. Some walls are being lined and painted currently. The next step of platforms will happen as funding permits. The thought of sitting drinking a coffee on a reconstructed station platform, overlooking beautiful lake Puketirini keeps us going!
